Guardians of the Herald Issue #22
The inky smoke dissipated quickly as Rabdos stepped out of the cloud and walked the familiar corridors of the cubicles leading to his host. He stopped outside a nondescript beige cubical. Seated in the cube staring at a computer screen sat Robert Dante, the man who had produced the demon Karack earlier that day. He sat at his desk staring at a spreadsheet on his computer screen, but his steel-blue eyes were vacant as though he stared through the screen.
Rabdos placed the little lemur on his shoulder and walked over to Dante. He switched hands with his axe and laid the empty hand on the man’s shoulder. With Dante seated, Rabdos sto

Little Rabdos, you are quite the celebrity these past few days.” The blazing eyes of Satan hovered just at the edge of the sooty black cloud that hid the devil’s true form. Only a dim outline of some enormous, horned bulk could be seen behind the eyes. The cloud of soot roiled all around Satan but never drifted close enough to his body to allow anyone to see real details. Rabdos knelt before the lord of the infernal pit and said nothing.
“He was on the edge of the plain of Gehenna, Master, hiding in the boulder fields. I believe he met with someone in secret,” Baalberith said, without looking up from his kneeling

Rabdos slowed his pace as he approached the boulder field on the edge of the plain of Gehenna. The ridge fires burned low and the craggy hills that surrounded the boulder field cast long shadows over the place Rabdos was headed.
He swiveled his head to see if any other denizens of Hell were following him and altered his path slightly. Arriving at a boulder, Rabdos slipped his axe behind his back and leaned up against a large boulder. He gathered in the reserves of power he’d siphoned from his host and willed his stony skin to transform. Slowly, his smooth grey flesh took on the exact color and texture of the rock he touched, blendin

Back away from them, Billy, Colonel Peters said over the command channel as warning indicators pulsed red in his peripheral vision, beckoning for attention. Billy didn’t move and neither did Angela. I said, back away.
Guardian One is down, Archangel, someone said over the command channel as well.
He’ll be fine, it was just ethereal fire, Peters responded, somewhat annoyed that whoever had spoken was new to this as evidenced by the fact that he couldn’t recognize their voice. Now clear this channel whoever you are. We’ve got a situation.
Damn right we’ve got a situation. This is Angel One, Guardian One is

Colonel Peters set his focus on Brandt’s data stream, minimizing Billy and Angela’s views but keeping them in his field of vision. The immaculate goatee and perfect hair of the man they’d come to call Blue Eyes hung in the center of the colonel’s vision as Brandt solidified the image of the person they were looking for. Almost immediately after Brandt’s screen showed Blue Eye’s face Angela’s displayed a similar picture. Only Billy’s screen still showed a moving and changing fuzzy oval where a face should be.
The uncomfortable silence stretched on. Colonel Peters had learned early on with Br

“Private Harrow, step away from your console!” Colonel Peters shouted, as he frantically struggled to get his shroud off his head. Everything in the control center known as Heaven came to a sudden halt. All eyes locked on Private Harrow, who turned to face the colonel with shock and horror etched on her face.
Peters waved to the armed guards at the door and pointed to Private Harrow. Both burly men strode purposefully in the private’s direction, glaring as they came. The colonel finally got his helmet off and nearly missed settling it on the stand in his haste to cross the room and meet the guards at the horrified priva

As Billy opened the door and walked through the white field surrounding the door faded out and was replaced by what appeared to be a living ,room with Brandt and Angela standing in the room. No demons waited with fiery axes. Billy walked into the room and felt a huge sense of relief wash over him.
Oh, Billy, you did it! Angela said crossing the room to where Billy stood.
Yeah, I did, Billy said smiling at Angela. Maybe there’s something to this God thing.
We can talk more about that later if you like? Angela said hopefully.
He came through a door into the training room for Christ’s sake, Brandt said. He didn’t do any

Billy and Angela arrived at the theater as First Sergeant Wilcox trotted up slightly out of breath. The first sergeant was in full battle gear. His helmet sat askew on his head, the body armor he wore was too big to fit properly, and the rifle he carried seemed odd in some way. Billy almost didn’t recognize him as the three of them flowed into the room.
“Hey kid,” Wilcox said stepping in behind Billy.
“What’s going on First Shirt?” Corporal Williams asked as he took up his station next to Angela’s couch as she began connecting the leads to her equipment.
“He’s Angel Two I bet,”

Colonel Peters waited until the door to his office closed fully before speaking. Corporal Seth Williams and First Sergeant Jack Wilcox stood before his desk at crisp attention. No one comes to a colonel’s desk for a good reason and these men knew it.
“At ease gents,” Colonel Peters said. Both men snapped their hands behind their backs to parade rest. “No, I said ease, men. Look, take a seat. Nobody’s in trouble here.”
Both men moved to sit in the uncomfortable looking chairs all military offices have in front of the desk.
“Corporal Williams, thank you for bringing what Angel 3 is seeing to ou

Billy and Angela walked alone along the halls to the converted operating theater from which they entered the ether. Billy felt heavy apprehension at the thought of going back after what had happened the day before when he was attacked by the pair of demons─ at least that was what Angela had called them. They did look like what Billy thought demons ought to look like, and the fire from those axes had felt hot enough for Hell too. There was something else as well that Billy just couldn’t put his finger on yet.
“Are they really, you know, demons?” Billy asked quietly.
Angela nodded and seemed to be ready to say more,
